Nigeria National Assembly Leaders in Crucial Meeting – Budget 2017

The National Assembly leadership on Tuesday held a crucial meeting in the office of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, over what insiders said was aimed at finding a middle ground on the issue of the 2017 budget.
It gathered that last night that the meeting, which lasted one and a half hours, was said to have centered on three key issues including the resolution of the logjam regarding the 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the request of virements to address shortfalls in the 2016 Budget.
Sources in the National Assembly confirmed that Speaker Yakubu Dogara led the leadership of the House of Representatives to Saraki's office, where they met with their Senate counterpart for the crucial meeting.
A source privy to the gathering however said that the meeting did not discuss the $29.9 billion external borrowing plan request of President Muhammadu Buahri, which was earlier rejected by the Senate for lack of details.
It was gathered that the leadership of the two chambers decided to meet in order to ensure that they speak with one voice henceforth on the issues.

"The meeting ironed out all issues regarding the MTEF and Virements requested by President Buhari and decided the way forward on the 2017 Budget," a source told select journalists.

The meeting is also said to have laid the foundation for continuous engagements between the two chambers of the National Assembly such that the process of Bills and issues demanding joint actions would run smoothly henceforth.

Just yesterday, the Senate rejected a list of 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees sent to it by the President over avalanche of petitions received by its Committee on Foreign Affairs against majority of the nominees.
