Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter says the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde may look easy on paper, but they should guard against taking their opponents lightly when they meet on Friday.
Bafana, who are on four points after two Group D matches, face a Cape Verde side yet to collect a point following their defeats to Burkina Faso and Senegal.
Cape Verde have not scored a goal in the group phase of the qualifiers and they have conceded four times. It might seem like Bafana will have an easy ride against their opponents in Praia, but Baxter warns that they could get the shock of their lives if they do not have the right attitude.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United coach made the perfect start with a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in the 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers in June, but he has told his players to forget about that win and focus on doing well against Cape Verde.
“Yes, on paper this will be an easier game than Nigeria, but our experience of football tells you that there are no easy games. This will be a difficult game, especially if we don’t have the right attitude,” Baxter said.
“We came off a great win against Nigeria and everybody will be patting themselves on the back. But the bad news is that we have to forget that. The Titanic sank a long time ago, Hitler is dead and we all have to move on.
“So Nigeria should give us confidence, but it’s not going to help us beat Cape Verde. I have challenged the players to get their heads together, hit the ground running and the stuff we did against Nigeria we make sure we do it the correct way again.”
Bafana have arrived in Cape Verde after leaving on Tuesday morning.
