10 shot in US city's French Quarter

One man was killed and nine people were injured after a shooting in the bustling French Quarter of New Orleans.

Two women and eight men were hurt during the shooting in the tourist district famed for its bars, bright lights and live music.

Police said the shooter opened fire shortly before 1.40am on Sunday local time (7.40am GMT) at the corner of Bourbon and Iberville streets.

The victims were aged between 20 and 37, Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said. One man died at a hospital.

Police believe that two men had begun arguing and shooting in the street and that none of the victims were the intended target.

Mr Harrison said one male victim was among two men arrested on firearms charges.

Hours later, people gathered for a candelit vigil close to the scene of the shooting to pay tribute to the victims.
Extra uniformed and plainclothes officers were already on duty and ambulance crews were on standby for the Bayou Classic football game on Saturday night between Southern and Grambling universities.

Officers were nearby, heard the shots and ran toward them.

Mr Harrison asked that anyone witnessing the shooting to call police so "we can hold those accountable who committed this heinous crime and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law".

During a news conference with Mr Harrison, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said authorities would pursue the shooters "very, very aggressively".

"It's totally unacceptable," Mr Landrieu said. "I mean, the violence just continues to spin out of control with people brandishing weapons whenever they think they can."
