AFRICAN MINISTERS COMMEND ACHIEVEMENTS MADE THROUGH FOCAC

AFRICAN MINISTERS COMMEND ACHIEVEMENTS MADE THROUGH FOCAC
DDIS ABABA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers from Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria on Thursday commended
achievements made through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Since the FOCAC Johannesburg Summit held in South Africa in 2015, many accomplishments have been done and many inroads have been made all around the development, Tanzanian foreign minister Augustine Philip Mahiga told Xinhua on the sidelines of the ongoing 30th AU summit.
In 2000, China and African countries launched the FOCAC as a platform for collective consultation, dialogue and partnership in the form of South-South cooperation, to further strengthen the friendly relations between the two sides, and jointly meet the challenges of the Millennium Development Goals and economic globalization.
At the Johannesburg Summit, China announced 10 major plans for China-Africa cooperation over the next three years, backed by a package of 60 billion U.S. dollars.
FOCAC always work for Africa because it is a forum that allows Africa and China to exchange views, think together and put critical issues for Africa on the table including issues about infrastructure and Africa development, Kenyan foreign minister Amina Mohamed told Xinhua.
FOCAC is a fantastic partnership that we value greatly, said Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigerian foreign minister.
"We all very appreciate as African countries that the Chinese government is making available resources such as technique and materials for African countries," said Onyeama in an interview.
Beijing Summit provides opportunity
China will this year host the FOCAC summit in Beijing. The Beijing summit is an additional opportunity that could discuss big issues of Africa and review the progress of the pledges that Africa and China made in the past, said Mohamed.

Up till now, China has signed cooperative agreements with more than 80 countries and organizations within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. Chinese businesses have invested over 50 billion U.S. dollars and created near-200,000 local jobs in the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative.

According to Mahiga, it is important that Africa and China share the vision of China's Belt and Road Initiative together at the highest level as the Belt and Road Initiative has given a new impetus to the FOCAC.
Tanzania looks forward to the forthcoming great participation at the Beijing Summit and the agenda to be discussed at the summit will be enhanced, said the minister.

He also expected that the vision shared in the global context of the Belt and Road Initiative will put new dynamism into the FOCAC framework.
