LUMBERJACKS CUT TCN’S LINE, THROW NSUKKA INTO DARKNESS

LUMBERJACKS CUT TCN’S LINE, THROW NSUKKA INTO DARKNESS
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that wood loggers operating within Ukana Town along the 9th Mile
to Nsukka Road in Enugu State have through their tree felling activities, damaged its transmission line between Oji River and Nsukka, thereby cutting off electricity supply to its 2X7.5 megavolt amp (MVA) 66/11 kilovolt (kV) transmission substation in Nsukka.

It explained in a statement from its General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, that the substation, which supplies electricity to Nsukka Town in Enugu, was now out and the town left without electricity supply from the national grid.
According to Mbah, several attempts to transmit electricity to the town through TCN’s 66kV transmission line failed until it dispatched its lines patrol team who then discovered that loggers fell an Iroko tree on the transmission right of way, which subsequently damaged three spans of conductors and cross arms of towers 60 to 64.

She noted that TCN’s technical crew have already visited the site and assessed the extent of damage to the line and towers. Materials for the repair, she stated were now being sourced from the company’s stores to effect the repair and restore electricity service to the university town.

“Replacement works is however expected to be completed within four days. The incident has been reported to security agencies who are currently conducting investigations with the view to apprehend the culprits,” Mbah, said.
While apologising for the attendant discomfort to electricity consumers in Nsukka Town, TCN however assured that it would do everything possible to ensure that the transmission line would be restored quickly. It also appealed to those who have information about the loggers to report to nearest security agency or TCN office to enable it apprehend them.
