27 KILLED AND 30 INJURED IN A SUICIDE ATTACK AMID PAKISTAN'S GENERAL ELECTION

At least 27 people were killed and 30 injured in a suicide attack Wednesday as Pakistanis headed to the polls to elect members of the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies.

A police convoy was targeted by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle outside a polling station in the restive city of Quetta, southwestern Pakistan, according to police and hospital officials, Deputy Inspector General Police Quetta Abdul Razzaq told reporters.

Five policemen and a child were among the fatalities, he added.

Mohammad Wasim, the doctor in charge at the city's main hospital, said the death toll was expected to rise as several injured were in critical condition.

Separately, a worker of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, one of the major parties contesting the election, was killed in a clash outside a polling station in Swabi, northwestern Pakistan.

Over 85,000 polling stations across the country opened at 8 a.m., with nearly 106 million voters eligible to cast ballots in races to fill all 272 seats in the federal parliament, as well as elections for control of the four provincial legislatures. Voting will continue until 6 p.m.

The military has deployed nearly 375,000 serving and retired defense personnel to polling stations nationwide, after a campaign in which hundreds died in election-related violence.

Three main political parties -- the centrist Pakistan Muslim League (N), the center-right Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the left-wing Pakistan People’s Party -- are vying to take power in Islamabad and the provinces of Sindh, Punjab, Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa.
