FOUR PLAYERS TO WATCH THE OPENING VARSITY FOOTBALL

The opening Varsity Football clash between UKZN and Wits is set to be a humdinger. Soccer Laduma takes a look at some of the players on both sides that are likely to set the game alight.

Mfanakile Phila Dlamini (UKZN)
The Amajita international was on target in the opening game of the USSA tournament in PE but was unfortunately injured. The striker will want to show his class in Varsity Football 2018.

Nqobeka Dlamini (UKZN)
The talisman of the UKZN team, the captain and midfielder leads by example on and off the field. He is a fourth-year law student who has all the leadership skills and quality that the coaches seek in a captain.

Kal Laing (Wits)
The Students have recruited heavily in the off-season by not only bringing former Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits player, Mark Haskins into their coaching staff, but also acquired the services of Kal Laing. The defender is highly experienced, having regularly played for Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge. His exposure will only benefit the team and it is this experience that he will bring to Varsity Football in 2018.

Clinton Mphahlele (Wits)
Wits are serious about posing a genuine threat in Varsity Football this season and have gone out and recruited winners. Mphahlele definitely fits into that category, having already tasted success in this competition with Tuks. The BCom Law student also has MDC experience with Baroka FC.

The opening match of the tournament takes place on Thursday 26 July at the Howard College Stadium at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
