NEWS AND GOSSIP ON PREMIER LEAGUE: JOSE MOURINHO, GABRIEL JESUS WILFRIED ZAHA, WILLIAN

The Brazilian, 21, scored 13 times last season as City won the Premier League title. Quoted by Sky Sports, he said: “I would like to thank the fans for the welcome and for how well they have treated me.

“I can say that it was the best decision I’ve made in my life to come to Manchester City because whilst I’m here I’m improving as a professional and as a person.

“Also thanks to the club for being so organised and focused since I arrived. Pep had an important role in my signing, but also the club. City is a huge club and it is getting bigger and bigger so I just want to say thanks for everything. I hope that I can keep making the fans happy.”

Pedro and Iwobi also sign…
It’s not just Gabriel Jesus who has agreed a new contract with his club. Pedro has signed a one-year extension to keep him at Chelsea until 2020, while Arsenal have announced that Alex Iwobi has signed a new long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Smile, Jose
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been urged to smile more by one of the club’s former players. Brian McClair, who played for United from 1987 to 1998, told BBC World Service Sport: “You should, at some point, look as though you are enjoying it. Jose maybe enjoys himself internally but from a football point of view, the Manchester United fans would very much welcome to see him smiling and laughing at appropriate times.”

Hodgson rubbishes Zaha reports
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has refuted claims that forward Wilfried Zaha wants to leave the club. It was reported today that Zaha is keen to depart Selhurst Park and has been linked with Chelsea. However, Hodgson told talkSPORT: “I spoke to Wilf yesterday and he certainly gave me no indication it was true about wanting to quit the club. In fact, we were talking about how good the new signings were and how they would help us.”

Sarri confident Willian will stay
Another London-based manager who expects one of his star players to stay is Chelsea’s Maurizio Sarri. When asked if Willian would remain at Stamford Bridge, Sarri told Sky Sports: “Yes. Very confident. I spoke yesterday with him about him being late, but not about his future. It was a very positive conversation. I am happy about it. There is not a problem with Willian.”
