LAW ENFORCEMENT ARREST 3 PEOPLE OVER 16-YEAR-OLD VICIOUS HOMICIDE

LAW ENFORCEMENT ARREST 3 PEOPLE OVER 16-YEAR-OLD VICIOUS HOMICIDE
The teenage girl was found dead in an abandoned building last week in Rome, investigators on the trail of a fourth person

The suspects are two Senegalese nationals who do not have legal permits to be in Italy - Mamadou Gara (26), Brian Minteh (43) and Chima Alinno (46) from Nigeria. They are suspected of gang rape, selling drugs and voluntary manslaughter, ten other non-EU nationals were interviewed at length by the public prosecutor.

On October 18, 16-year-old Desirée Mariottini was reported missing, and the next day, her body was discovered in an abandoned building in Rome’s San Lorenzo district, believed to be the headquarters of several drug dealers with infiltrations of the camorra that runs African pushers. A free zone for crime and abuse. Those who live in the area, keep away from it. For months now, residents have been filing complaints with the City Hall, the City Council and the Prefecture. Violent fights at night, puddles of blood, the next morning, on the sidewalks at the mercy of Nigerian and Moroccan pusher and occupants of the barracks, the all too known mixture of delinquency and desperation, of people who live subject to their own laws. The access to the building, where the body of the teen was found, is forbidden. Chained shut. At 3 am on October 19, ambulance paramedics - someone had called them anonymously- found themselves stuck outside and had to wait for the Fire Brigade to break in, while Desirée was probably agonizing.

As revealed by the autopsy, Desiree ‘s death would not be linked to an overdose but to an asphyxiation cause. The young girl with all probability died suffocating before being sexually assaulted by more than one person.

An eyewitness, a Senegalese boy, has come forward on national TV saying he would have seen Desiree dying or perhaps already dead, lying down with a blanket on top. Being at the abandoned building the night of the crime, he said, that when he arrived, “there was a girl screaming” adding that “there was another girl on the bed; they had put a blanket over her but you could see her head,” and that he didn’t “know if she was breathing, she seemed dead already. The other girl was screaming and saying she was dead”. He said there were six or seven other people in the room. Now police have 3 men in custody and is on the tracks of a fourth one. Last year, 113 women were murdered in Italy. In the first 6 months of 2018, 44 women were already killed, 30% more than in the same period of 2017. One woman killed, on average, every 60 hours.

Today, as every other time, the horrible death of Desirée - which has once again shocked the entire nation - should call everyone to responsibility, especially the City of Rome – yet not only - which has indeed begun its evictions campaign, though starting right from the House of Women, whose aim was actually that to rescue them. Perhaps there is some other place to take care of before yet-another-victim-number comes too soon.
